Data Scientist

General Responsibilities:

The Data Scientist is responsible for generating insights and recommendations from Hertz’s rich history of observational data. Working closely with management and senior level data scientists, the Data Scientist will build descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive models with the goal of maximizing profit and gaining a competitive advantage in the market. Typical business problems addressed by a Revenue Management Data Scientist at Hertz include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Modelling and predicting competitor behavior

  • Booking trend analysis and anomaly detection

  • Exploratory analysis and testing support

  • Demand forecasting

  • Revenue optimization

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Curate data from many sources, including internal databases and external APIs, and aggregate to a format appropriate for building descriptive reports or predictive models

  2. Solve complex analytical problems using quantitative approaches using unique blend of technical, business mathematical, analytical and data skills

  3. Use deep understanding of statistical and predictive modeling concepts, machine learning approaches, clustering and classification techniques, and recommendation and optimization algorithms

  4. Analyze large, complex multi-dimensional data sets with variety of tools

  5. Partner with business stakeholders to prepare and maintain reports/dashboards that will be used to derive insights into past/present business performance

Mandatory Requirements

Educational Background:

  • Degree in a quantitative field with an emphasis on predictive modeling, including: Statistics, Data Science, Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Actuarial Science, Mathematics, or Economics

  • Master’s degree preferred but not required in lieu of experience

Required Experience:

  • 2+ years experience (professional or school) querying data from relational databases using SQL

  • Experience using Tableau or similar BI tool

  • Fluency in a mathematical programming language, such as R, Python, Julia or similar

  • 2+ years experience (professional or school) querying building data science models with big data

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience building statistical models, such as: Generalized Linear Models, ARIMA models, Generalized Additive Models, Bayesian models, tree models, and deep neural networks

  • Experience generating and solving optimization models

  • Experience working in a cloud computing environment, such as AWS or Azure

  • Experience developing in a distributed computing environment using tools such as Apache Spark
